It’s here. 2020 is coming to an end, and a bright shiny new year is on its way. And while 2020 looked a little different than we expected, we want to remember a few big moments from the year. We installed our 10,000th charging station and celebrated the 10th anniversary of our first SemaConnect installation ever! Here are a few more highlights from 2020.

Renewal of the Federal Tax Credit

We began January with great news: Congress had renewed the Federal Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Tax Credit for 2020! Businesses that install EV charging stations by December 31, 2020 can receive credit for 30% of the cost, up to $30,000. This tax credit had previously expired at the end of 2017, but it was retroactively extended to include installations between 2018-2020. We were thrilled to share this news with SemaConnect customers.

We Won (Again!)

You may remember this case from last year’s recap: in 2017, our competitor, ChargePoint, sued SemaConnect. They claimed that we had violated their patents on EV charging technology, which we had not. The US District Court and US Court of Appeals sided with SemaConnect. In January 2020, the Supreme Court of the United States denied ChargePoint’s petition for a writ of certiorari. In denying ChargePoint’s final appeal, SCOTUS affirmed the lower courts’ decisions that the idea of an EV charging network could not belong to a single company. SemaConnect and other EV charging companies will continue to innovate and compete based on our technology and network features.

The Arrival of COVID-19

On the heels of our January wins, COVID-19 arrived. Many of our customers, EV drivers, and employees immediately shifted to working from home. This shift in where we spend our time meant that more apartments started to boost their resident amenities. Office, mixed-use, and municipal facilities took advantage of decreased traffic to complete site work or update infrastructure. And as the world saw the impact that pandemic shutdowns had on emissions and air pollution, more drivers considered buying an EV after COVID-19.

New Product Launches

Can you believe that we launched multiple products this year? It’s true. In May, we introduced a new Multifamily Charging as a Service (CaaS) program. With Multifamily CaaS, apartments, condos, and HOAs can flexibly add the Series 5 personal charging station and get all software, maintenance, and upgrades for a low monthly fee. In August, we released the new Series 7 fleet charging station. This dual station can be assigned to a specific fleet vehicle, with a new fleet management portal for fleet managers. Finally, we revealed the next generation of load management features on the SemaConnect Network. Compatible with all SemaConnect stations, this software feature gives station administrators the ability to control peak power and power sharing at their stations.

Partnership with Gilbarco Veeder-Root

In August, we announced our new partnership with Gilbarco Veeder-Root. Now, fleet operators and fuel stations can buy the Amps2Go Series 6 and Series 7 charging stations, powered by SemaConnect. This partnership between the leading provider of EV charging amenities and the leading provider of fueling systems will help fleets and fuel stations convert to the future.

Our Newest Investor: Trilantic North America

In October, we announced our newest partnership: Trilantic North America. This new investor will support SemaConnect’s growth so we can expand our teams and our technology. We’re excited to introduce even more new products and services next year, thanks to the help of Trilantic North America!

2020 has been a groundbreaking year. Thank you to our station owners, drivers, installers, partners, and team members for your support. We can’t wait to see what 2021 has to offer! Happy holidays and happy new year from SemaConnect!
